Michigan reported its lowest single-day death count from the coronavirus since March over the weekend, with just five deaths in Sunday’s report.
The lowest daily report before Sunday was on March 22, shortly after the first case of COVID-19 was reported in the state, according to data analysis from the Detroit Free Press.
Memorial Day weekend may have affected Sunday’s reports, a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services told the Detroit Free Press. Sunday also historically has yielded lower case counts and deaths.
Michigan’s has nearly 55,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, according to the MDHHS. The death toll for the state is 5,240.
The City of Detroit is the area with the most cases, with 10,727 confirmed cases and 1,322 deaths. Detroit is counted separately from its home of Wayne County, which has 9,089 confirmed cases and 1,042 deaths.
Wayne is followed by Oakland County at 8,226 confirmed cases and 955 deaths. Macomb County has 6,516 confirmed cases and 778 deaths. Kent, Genesee and Washtenaw Counties have 3,385, 1,961 and 1,298 confirmed cases, respectively.
The MDHHS also reports that 33,168 people have recovered as of May 22. Recovered cases are defined as those who are alive 30 days post-onset of COVID-19. Numbers are updated if someone with a confirmed diagnosis dies of coronavirus-related causes after 30 days.
Michigan is currently ranked seventh among states hardest hit, according to data from the COVID Tracking Project. It trails behind Texas, which has more than 55,000 confirmed cases in state. New York has the most confirmed cases in the country at more than 362,000 cases. It is followed by New Jersey at more than 155,000 confirmed cases.
There are currently more than 1.6 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country, according to the COVID Tracking Project.
